reinvested in our downtown since 1993. The streets have been streetscaped with
brick pavers and street lights that are replicas from the early 1920’s. Over 90
buildings have had facade improvements, many restored back to their original

The "City Vision 2020 Master Plan" is a redevelopment and
revitalization plan for the "heart and soul" of our region. Historic
Downtown La Crosse. The downtown is the "hub" of the regional economic
wheel. In the spring of 1993, we began the implementation of the Master
Plan goals to strengthen our economic " hub" and provide a high degree of
economic stability for our entire region.
Master Achievements:
-Created the City Vision 2000 Master Plan. The
Master plan is a planning "Road Map" and business recruitment tool for all
redevelopment and revitalization activities. Due to the successes, the
Master Plan was updated in 1996, 1999 and 2004.
- Private and public new investment surpasses $133 million
as of June 2004
-115 building facade restorations/improvements completed.
- DMI secured a special state legislative bill providing
$250,000 for the creation of the Riverwalk at Riverside park.
- DMI created one of the largest Historic Commercial
Districts in the state. 96 buildings contribute to this district and
the district is listed on the State and National Historic Registers. It is
now identified as being a prime regional tourist destination.
- CenturyTel selected Historic Downtown La Crosse for
their new $27 million regional headquarters 850 new jobs brought into the
downtown.
- FirstLogic selected Historic Downtown La Crosse for
their headquarters brining over 250 jobs into the downtown.
- $14 million expansion of the Civic Center.
- DMI created streetscape, wayfinding signage and building
design guideline manuals.
- DMI secured the only state approved I-90 signs and
trailblazer signs identifying the Historic Downtown District.
- Development of the $1.4 million multi-use recreational
trail along the La Crosse River.
- $1.4 million levee redevelopment project with transient
boat dockage.
- Employment in Historic Downtown has surpassed an
estimated 8,600 employees.
- $5 million in 80 block faces of historic streetscaping
and beautification projects completed.
- New update to the downtown Master Plan completed in 2004
(City Vision 2020 Master Plan)
- New creative marketing program and materials promoting
major development site opportunities. business retention, corporate and
small business recruitment and residential development completed in 2004 (first
program of this type)

- 2002 recipient of the prestigious national 2002 Great American Main Street
Award
- Selected as the 2002 Best Revitalized Downtown in
Wisconsin (Wisconsin Trails Magazine)
- 2002 received the "Wisconsin Trust For Historic
Preservation" Award
Projects and activities such as these will continue to
bring residents, visitiors, employees and new tax base into the economic "hub"
of our region...now known as Historic Downtown La Crosse. DMI and the
Master Plan focuses on the downtown....but the successes achieved have a
tremendous economic impact on the entire region. We have progressed a
great deal since 1993. We Must Continue To Move Forward. Economic
redevelopment/revitalization of our downtown is never completed!
