Our Nationally Registered Historic District has had over $104 million dollars reinvested in our downtown since 1993. The streets have been streetscaped with brick pavers and street lights that are replicas from the early 1920’s. Over 90 buildings have had facade improvements, many restored back to their original design.

Over 8,300 employees will be working in the downtown area.

We have retail storefronts, office space, residential housing etc. available for lease and for sale.

Please contact Downtown Mainstreet  at (608) 784-0440 or email for further information.

The "City Vision 2020 Master Plan" is a redevelopment and revitalization plan for the "heart and soul" of our region.  Historic Downtown La Crosse.  The downtown is the "hub" of the regional economic wheel.  In the spring of 1993, we began the implementation of the Master Plan goals to strengthen our economic " hub" and provide a high degree of economic stability for our entire region.

Master Achievements:

-Created the City Vision 2000 Master Plan.  The Master plan is a planning "Road Map" and business recruitment tool for all redevelopment and revitalization activities.  Due to the successes, the Master Plan was updated in 1996, 1999 and 2004.

- Private and public new investment surpasses $133 million as of June 2004

-115 building facade restorations/improvements completed.

- DMI secured a special state legislative bill providing $250,000 for the creation of the Riverwalk at Riverside park.

- DMI created one of the largest Historic Commercial Districts in the state.   96 buildings contribute to this district and the district is listed on the State and National Historic Registers.  It is now identified as being a prime regional tourist destination.

- CenturyTel selected Historic Downtown La Crosse for their new $27 million regional headquarters  850 new jobs brought into the downtown.

- FirstLogic selected Historic Downtown La Crosse for their headquarters brining over 250 jobs into the downtown.

- $14 million expansion of the Civic Center.

- DMI created streetscape, wayfinding signage and building design guideline manuals.

- DMI secured the only state approved I-90 signs and trailblazer signs identifying the Historic Downtown District.

- Development of the $1.4 million multi-use recreational trail along the La Crosse River.

- $1.4 million levee redevelopment project with transient boat dockage.

- Employment in Historic Downtown has surpassed an estimated 8,600 employees.

- $5 million in 80 block faces of historic streetscaping and beautification projects completed.

- New update to the downtown Master Plan completed in 2004 (City Vision 2020 Master Plan)

- New creative marketing program and materials promoting major development site opportunities.  business retention, corporate and small business recruitment and residential development completed in 2004 (first program of this type)

DMI AWARDS RECEIVED:
- 2002 recipient of the prestigious national 2002 Great American Main Street Award

- Selected as the 2002 Best Revitalized Downtown in Wisconsin (Wisconsin Trails Magazine)

- 2002 received the "Wisconsin Trust For Historic Preservation" Award

Projects and activities such as these will continue to bring residents, visitiors, employees and new tax base into the economic "hub" of our region...now known as Historic Downtown La Crosse.  DMI and the Master Plan focuses on the downtown....but the successes achieved have a tremendous economic impact on the entire region.  We have progressed a great deal since 1993.  We Must Continue To Move Forward.  Economic redevelopment/revitalization of our downtown is never completed!
